The Cat’s out of the Bag

Posted by Valerie on March 17, 2009

The AP article referenced in the following post is going nationwide this afternoon.

Over the last three hours, Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, Myrtle Beach Sun News, Miami Herald, Kansas City Star, CBS News, Fresno Bee, Chicago Daily Herald, Anchorage Daily News, Grand Forks Daily Herald, MSN Money, San Diego Union Tribune, Duluth News Tribune, Forbes, San Jose Mercury News, Santa Cruz Sentinal, Newsweek, Baltimore Sun, Buffalo News, Oregonian, Chicago Tribune, Cleveland News, Hartford Courant, Seattle Times, Los Angeles Times, Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Orlando Sentinal, Houston Chronicle, San Francisco Chronicle and others have picked this one up!

Many areas and industries are affected by CPSIA and so many people are hurting. CPSIA needs to be repealed for many reasons, but I am very grateful that books are the focus for this national coverage, as they could so easily get lost in the shuffle.

We estimate that we’ve purchased children’s books from over 100 libraries over the last 15 years. We don’t see many libraries with only a few pre-1985 children’s books. While library copies of picture books for little kids do tend to wear out early, chapter books for children ages 8-12 typically endure quite well.

(P. S. I had an interview with Publishers Weekly today. I’m hoping for good things to come from that.)

I am VERY HAPPY about this turn of events. Hopefully things will start looking up!

I had a thought reading the CPSC General Counsel comments on books. It says that the restrictions do not apply to books that are intended for readers off all ages, including children but only for those intended primarily for children.
Almost sounds like we could take the plumeting reading levels of American kids to define most chapter books into the young adult section. Joking (sort of).

LOL, yes! For a long time, I’ve said two things about books. First, most YA books from the 1950’s would pass for college level now. Second, no picture book is suitable for children if it’s not enjoyable for all ages.

  • CPSC: No, we didn’t ask libraries to pull pre-1985 books said,
